Action On Vacant Buildings
Councillor Dominic Haney is calling on Reform Party councillors leading Durham County Council to act on the scandal of vacant buildings falling into disrepair and blighting our local community.
“These buildings could be used for housing people or by a local business – not left as eyesores with risks to safety or public health. I am calling for an urgent review of all abandoned properties to understand how the owners can be forced to bring them up to standard and back into use,” Dominic Haney explained.
Ways of stopping landowners leaving vacant properties to fall into disrepair and disuse could include a new charge of DOUBLE rates for buildings that have been abandoned for a long time. This would make landlords pay back to the community if they are going to sit on sites and try to wait for buildings to crumble or speculate.
