John Lightley - Shincliffe


John Lightley comes from a Durham mining family. After graduating from Durham University, he was a National Service officer in the DLI and served in Korea. He continued this link with the DLI and served as a volunteer, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After some years in industry and education he became an Agricultural Training Adviser, taking early retirement after 21 years in this capacity. All his working life has been spent in and around Durham City and he has lived in Shincliffe since 1964.

Elected to Shincliffe Parish Council in 1975, he was first elected to the City Council in 1995 and is currently County Councillor for the Elvet Division.

He was a Churchwarden for 12 years and is a member of the Deanery Synod.

He joined the Liberal Party as a student and has been an active member since that time. He has held various offices in the Party at local, regional and national levels.

He is interested in electoral and constitutional reform, agriculture, the environment, social services and the local economy.

To try to make the new system of Local Government work for the benefit of the residents. It must be more "open" and involve the public wherever it is relevant.
