The Liberal Democrats are the only party who can beat Labour in Durham City. The Conservatives finished a poor third last time and have not had a single Councillor in Durham for over 25 years.
Durham is the key Lib Dem/Labour battleground in the North East.

- Income Tax cut by 4p Millions of low and middle earners to benefit from the lowest tax level since 1916.
- Free personal care when you need it no one forced to sell their home to pay for care.
- No tuition fees, no top-up fees university affordable for every student.
- More investment in childrens early years - spend the £1bn Child Trust Fund when it matters most.
- 10,000 more police on the streets cutting crime and the fear of crime.
- £25 more on the pension every week at 75 a million pensioners off means-testing.
- Save Our Post Office much needed investment in the Post Office network and an end to Labour's post office closures that are striking at the heart of local communities.
- Local schools controlled by local people The Lib Dems have campaigned against the closing of local schools in Durham. Academies are placed into private control while the taxpayers still foot the bill. We call on extra investment to come with no strings attached.
- NO to 42 days and ID cards There is no proven need for potentially innocent people to be held for 42 days without charge. The limit in America is just 2 days. Lib Dems also want to see the billions of pounds earmarked for the ineffective and intrusive ID Card system to be spent on getting more police on the street. This Government has shown it cannot be trusted with our private data.
- Axe the Council Tax Council Tax to be replaced by a fairer and more affordable system whereby people people pay in accordance with their means.
- Withdrawal from Iraq The Lib Dems were the only major party to vote against the Iraq war.
- Green Tax Switch - cut pollution, cut congestion, and boost renewable energy by taxing pollution and not people.
