The Durham University Liberal Democrats aim to create and maintain a large and vibrant political society that encourages student participation by offering a range of events and opportunities and that works with and supports the local party in what is the key target seat of the North East.
Membership and events are not restricted to university students and all young Liberal Democrats in and around Durham are encouraged to contact the society to ask about how to get involved.
The society works throughout the year to:
- Build links with and support the Liberal Democrats in Durham City
- Tackle apathy, encourage student participation in politics and provide a clear presence of young Liberal Democrats in Durham
- Invite MPs, MEPs and Peers from the party to give talks to members of the society
- Campaign on both national and local issues that concern students
- Hold a series of exciting social events where like-minded liberal students can meet and have fun
Durham is the main target seat for the Liberal Democrats in the North East and the result in the next general election could be decided by how the young people of Durham use their vote. Only the Liberal Democrats can beat Labour here – the Conservatives finished a poor third last time.
National opinion polling shows that the Liberal Democrats are the party of choice for young people. The Lib Dems are the only party that would scrap tuition fees and top up fees. We have also been ranked as the most green party by the Guardian and we have led the campaign for more to be done to curb the human rights abuse in Tibet, Darfur and Zimbabwe.
