The Party Structure
The City Party meets monthly, usually at County Hall, with an elected Executive co-ordinating the affairs of the party within the City. There are 5 Branch groups that also meet on a regular basis, to discuss matters of interest to them. Working in tandem with the Liberal Democrat City and County Councillor Groups, the City Party is responsible for putting the Liberal Democrats' vision into practice in Durham.
Unlike other parties, our resources come only from members' subscriptions and other limited sources such as newsletter advertising. However, with no vested interests to represent, our Party is free to represent the views and campaign on behalf of its members and all Durham residents.
Why Are We Here?
The Preamble to our Federal Constitution states that
"The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no-one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity".
Durham City Liberal Democrats seek to put those fine words into action in the City of Durham It is no easy task. Years of economic decline, educational underachievement and the break-up of communities across the City have taken their toll. However, Durham has huge potential, and important opportunities for growth exist. Perhaps its most significant resource is its citizens.
Durham Liberal Democrats recognise that turning the tide of decline is no easy task. But as a party that puts people first, we are committed to rise to the challenge of realising Durham's potential and creating a better city for all of us. Our goal is to achieve sustainable regeneration, development, and prosperity of the whole of Durham - from the city centre to its outlying villages - and to consolidate its position as a thriving major European city.
