UNNECESSARY ELECTION TO COST TAXPAYER £600,000
22nd January 2008

Labour plans for a new Unitary Council in Durham are in further disarray after it was revealed that elections for the new Authority will cost local taxpayers more than half a million pounds.

The elections on May 1st this year have been called after Labour decided to impose a new, single council for the whole County despite 76% of residents voting against the plan.

Lib Dem Deputy Leader of Durham City, Carol Woods said,

“At every stage, Labour have shown their contempt for local residents. They have ignored our referendum and they have frittered away hundreds of thousands of pounds.

“They tried to sell this to the people as a cost cutting exercise but this latest revelation shows that residents were right to see through that.

“Here in Durham the Lib Dems took over a failing Council and turned it around. Now Labour wants to wrestle back control through undemocratic means and they do not care about the cost to the taxpayer.

“There are so many more worthy causes to which £600,000 would make a huge difference. To spend this money on an election that no one wants would be a disgrace.”

“The Lib Dems have been against these plans from the outset and we are being proved right day after day. In the last few months alone Labour have twice forced their own Leader to face a vote of no confidence and the Council’s Chief Exec – a leading figure in the reorganisation - has jumped ship to Cambridge. Ironically - having expended so much energy forcing a Unitary system on Durham - he has moved to head up a two-tier Council.

"With disaster following disaster, Labour should swallow their pride and scrap these senseless plans before it’s too late."
