UNITARY POWER BASE HARMING DURHAM
5th June 2008
|
After only five weeks of the new Unitary Council for County Durham, fears that resources would be diverted away from Durham City have been proved correct.
Lib Dem Cllr Carol Woods said, “I learned today that the Unitary Council has a new initiative aimed at helping families but the only areas to benefit are Sedgefield, Derwentside and Easington. It is no surprise that of the ten Labour members who make up the Council’s Cabinet, nine of them come from these three areas.
“The question is why this money is not being shared right across the County. It would appear that Labour are penalising those who had the temerity to vote against them. It will be hard-up families across Durham City, Chester le Street and Wear Valley who will be hit hardest by this .”
“We feared that the new Council would mean Durham City and its villages were short-changed as the Labour leaders pushed funds towards their areas.
“The warning signs have been clear for some time now. The entire Cabinet of the new authority is made up of Labour members and there is not one representative of Durham District. The Lib Dems attempted to halt this dangerous power grab but the Conservatives conspired with Labour to defeat us. We are now left with an uneven and unrepresentative power base at County Hall.
“The effects of this are already being felt.” |
