POST OFFICE CAMPAIGN UPDATE
2nd July 2008
|
Lib Dem-backed campaigns to save Post Offices in Witton Gilbert, Esh Winning and Pittington from the current round of closures have succeeded. Meanwhile, Durham's Labour MP stands accused of rank hypocrisy having voted in Parliament for closures to go ahead.
The Liberal Democrats in Durham started collecting signatures for a petition to protect local post offices earlier this year.
In Esh Winning, local councillors John Wilkinson and Paul Guy led the fight to save the village's post office.
In Witton Gilbert, Mark Wilkes and Rev Crooks worked to prevent the closure of Witton's Post Office.
Carol Woods and Maureen Wood led the way in the effort to keep Pittington Post Office open.
All three of these Post Offices will not now be closed, much to the relief of local campaigners and residents.
Cllr Mark Wilkes commented, "Experience tells us that the most important stage in saving a post office comes prior to the proposals being announced.
"In the South of the County, none of the post offices on the proposed list survived, despite concerted campaigns during the consultation.
"Our aim in Witton, Esh Winning and Pittington was to keep these post offices off the list completely so they could go on providing vital services to the community.
"We will now turn our attention to the even tougher campaign to save Brancepeth and Gilesgate post offices"
In a further development, Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokeperson for Durham, Carol Woods has expressed her astonishment at the hypocrisy exhibited by the City's Labour MP.
Carol said, "In mid-March our MP voted in Parliament to continue the programme of post office closures and now, with those closures announced, she tries to tell us she has been campaigning to save them.
Surely, voting in favour of what you claim to be trying prevent must rank as the least effective campaigning method in history.
A look at her website also shows not a single story or press release from her office on post offices closures. Her claim to have been campaigning on this issue is an insult to the intelligence of Durham residents and I’m sure it’s fooling no one. |
