POLICE, NOT PLASTIC SAY LIB DEMS
25th September 2008

On the day that the Home Secretary unveils the design of the UK’s first ID card, Lib Dem campaigner Carol Woods has called on the government to scrap the scheme and use the money to fund 10,000 extra police officers.

Carol said, “ID cards are costly, ineffective and intrusive. They are likely to cost taxpayers £19bn - as well as the £90 charge to buy one - and I want to see that money spent on getting more police on the streets.

“When I speak to people and ask them what can be done to make our streets safer, the resounding response is to get more bobbies on the beat. Forcing people to carry an ID card will not make us safer, but more police officers will."

The Lib Dems have also raised serious doubts over the Government’s ability to keep the personal database safe.

Carol Woods said, “Who would honestly trust this Government to keep our data safe? Hardly a week goes by without some vital personal data going missing and a central ID database would be a disaster waiting to happen. Biometrics is not the solution to the Government’s incompetence in handling sensitive data. The Home Secretary needs to own up to the failures of her Government.”
