New Pool Gets Name and Stays On Time and On Budget
17th January 2008

The Lib Dem project to build a state of the art leisure facility for Durham remains on track and will be called 'Freeman Quay Leisure Centre'.

The new pool and leisure complex is due to open in July and will replace the ageing baths at Elevt Waterside.

Upon taking control of the City Council in 2003, the Lib Dems heeded long-standing calls from the public to build a complex worthy of the City Centre.

Despite opposition to the project from Labour, the construction work remains on time and, crucially, on budget.

Lib Dem Deputy Leader of the City Council, Carol Woods welcomed the naming of the new facility.

Carol said, "This is another small milestone in this wonderful project. It's exciting for the whole City to have this complex getting ever nearer completion.

"As a party, the Lib Dems made it a priority to stop the years of talking about a new pool and get on and build one. I'm disappointed that Labour tried to score points by putting obstacles in the way but we have overcome those and the result will be a fantastic addition to the City.

"At a time when every Government project seems to suffer huge delays and massive overspend, everyone involved should be congratulated that we have managed to stay in time and budget with this pool.

"The only problem now is that Labour will have scrapped Durham's City Council by the time the pool opens. These two events show the difference between the two parties very clearly. Whereas we listened to the people by building this pool, Labour have ignored a referendum by scrapping the local council."
