MP's objections to regeneration dismissed as 'nonsense' by Lib Dem Leader

Durham City's Labour MP has been heavily criticised after her attempt to derail Lib Dem plans for regeneration at Byland Lodge were dismissed by the Government Office for the North East. She is also facing criticism for labelling Durham's villages as "low-income ghettos".
The MP had attempted to have an application to redevelop Byland Lodge 'called in' despite there being no public opposition to the plans.
Lib Dem Leader of the Durham City Council, Cllr Fraser Reynolds said, "It was an absolute nonsense for the local MP to intervene in this way - the whole ethos of our work with the Durham Villages Regeneration Company (DVRC) is about creating balanced communities and this area of the City is dominated by student accommodation, it needs this prestigious scheme to offer more choice.
"Local people were happy with the scheme and there were only 2 other objections - if it had been unacceptable Durham people would have let us know and we would have listened."
Lib Dem Deputy Leader on the City Council, Cllr Carol Woods added,
"I can see no basis for the MP's objections other than a further attempt to obstruct the good work being done by the Lib Dems in Durham. She appears to do little else other than attack the City Council rather than support our efforts to improve the area for local residents.
"Durham City provides over 40% of the whole of County Durham's allocation for affordable housing and our partnership with DVRC has meant millions of pounds of extra investment being poured into the villages of Durham, as well as the City Centre.
"I also find it insulting that she has today labelled our villages as "low-income ghettos". I live in one of our villages myself and I'm proud of the broad spectrum of people and properties that populate mine and many other villages." |
