Lib Dems Launch Biggest Ever County Durham Campaign
4th April 2008

The Lib Dems have confirmed their position as the number one challengers to Labour in County Durham at their campaign launch today.

The Liberal Democrats look set to field over 100 candidates – many in places that have never previously had the option of a Lib Dem vote.

Lib Dem group Leader on the existing County Council, Nigel Martin said, “Our launch today illustrates the huge progress made by the party and confirms that we are the only party who can beat Labour on May 1st. Despite attempts to make progress in the region, the Conservatives hold very little appeal to local voters. May 1st will be a straight fight between Labour and the Liberal Democrats. It’s a fight in which our chances are getting better by the day.”

Fraser Reynolds, Leader of Durham City Council, is heading up a Lib Dem Federation across the County aimed at improving the spread of Liberal Democracy in the area. Fraser said, “I have led by example by standing in a division previously dominated by Labour. In the past many residents across the County have not had a real alternative to Labour. This time, with such a huge number of candidates, we will ensure that Labour will have to work if they want to win their seats rather than winning by default as they have at times in the past.”

Carol Woods, Parliamentary Spokesperson for the Lib Dems in Durham City commented, “Support for this Government, even amongst its former heartlands is at an all time low. Local residents are drawn to the positive agenda of the Lib Dems. We are fighting to protect local communities and respond to what they need rather than what a giant council thinks they need. We are working to make our neighbourhoods cleaner and greener and to tackle the problem of anti-social behaviour; through tough measures where required and through the increasing of youth provisions so that our young people have more to do with their time.

“May 1st provides the first genuine opportunity in a lifetime for the people of County Durham to send the winds of change through the corridors of County Hall. The Lib Dems in the County are better placed than ever to finally end the decades of labour neglect.”
