Lib Dem Council demands Post Offices are protected
24th July 2008

The Lib Dem City Council has passed a motion calling for Post offices at Brancepeth and Gilesgate to be saved from closure.

Lib Dem Deputy Leader of Durham City Council Carol Woods put the motion before full council following the recent announcement that both branches are set to be shut under Labour’s crippling closure programme.

The motion was seconded by the Lib Dem Councillor for Deerness Valley (which includes the Brancepeth branch), John Wilkinson.

In the motion, Cllr Woods said,
“Post Offices are the life blood of communities in both rural and urban areas, it is vital that the true social value of the post office network is included when the value of the post office is looked at.

The continuous erosion of post office services by the government has made it hard for post masters and mistresses to continue to run a profitable business and provide a valuable community service.

“We are fighting to keep a post office in both locations and I hope this council will send a message to the government in this consultation that says we want to retain these two offices and indeed the whole network which is the only social network we have in many communities.

“It would be ridiculous to destroy the post office network and then try to rebuild a similar network from scratch when we realise it is needed.”

Carol Woods added, “Along with local residents we have fought these closures from the start and we will continue to the bitter end. We have been inundated with support for our post office petitions in both Gilesgate and Brancepeth and we will make sure the strength of public anger at these closures is felt by this Government.

They cannot go on ignoring local people.”
