Lib Dems deliver as Freemans Quay opens
18th July 2008

Durham's new swimming pool and leisure complex opened its doors for the first time today as the Lib Dem City Council celebrated delivering this landmark facility.

The £12.3m building contains a 25m 8-lane pool as well as a learner pool, both of which have floating floors. There is also a gym, dance studio and sports hall. In addition there is an exhibition area, cyber café and food court.

Sue Pitts, Lib Dem City Councillor and Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture said, "Our priority was to ensure we created a facility that catered for everyone, regardless of age or ability and we've done that in considerable style, on time and on budget."

For the first week, the public can swim for just 5p.

Lib Dem Cllr Carol Woods said, "I hope everyone will take advantage of this opening offer to come and swim for a shilling. This is a superb facility that will be a credit to Durham for years to come.

"The Lib Dem Council saw this project through from start to finish and it is a great credit to the hard work put in by so many people that we have delivered on our promise, on time and on budget.

"Despite opposition at every step, we have delivered for the people of Durham and we take it as a compliment that those who have tried all they can to derail this project are now trying to claim some of the credit - even they now see what a great success this leisure complex is.

"I'm sure that as the people of Durham come to use the pool and leisure facilities here over the coming months, they'll be as proud as I am at the job that has been done."
