LIB DEMS VOW TO FIGHT ON TO SAVE POST OFFICES
1st July 2008

Durham Liberal Democrats have vowed to step up their fight against Labour’s Post Office closure programme, after it was announced today that the post offices at Brancepeth and Gilesgate are to be closed.

These latest closures are part of a 2,500 nationwide closure programme currently being forced through by the Labour Government.

On hearing the news Carol Woods, Parliamentary spokesperson for Durham City said: “The Government has shown utter disregard for the local communities affected by today’s announcement. For many people – often those most in need - travelling to the nearest post office will no longer be an option, they will have to go without vital services. This attack strikes at the heart of our communities.

“Our local MP needs to explain why she voted in favour of these closures in Parliament. Once again she has placed party loyalty ahead of what’s best for Durham.

“The Lib Dems are the only party with a costed plan to provide the investment needed to save the post office network. The Government is meanwhile stripping away vital business from Post Offices, no doubt resulting in even more closures in the future.

“The Lib Dem City Council has diverted business toward Post Offices by allowing residents to pay their bills there. The Government has the power to do a similar thing on a much bigger scale but has chosen to wash its hands of the problem. It is the people of Brancepeth and Gilesgate that are now having to deal with the consequences of this Labour failure.”
