LIB DEMS WIN IN DURHAM AGAIN
2nd May 2008

The Liberal Democrats have continued their run of success in Durham district by winning 15 of the 22 seats contested for the new Unitary Authority.

Across the City Centre and the villages Labour support collapsed and voters gave their backing to the positive agenda of the Lib Dems.

As well as retaining control of Newton Hall, Neville's Cross, Gilesgate, Belmont and Elvet, the Lib Dems saw victories in Sherburn, Framwellgate Moor and Deerness Valley - where John Wilkinson overturned a 1400 Labour majority to win.

Carol Woods, who along with Maureen Wood overcame a 700 Labour majority, said, "The Liberal Democrats backed the people when they said they didn't want this Council and now the people of Durham have backed us to provide a strong voice for local residents.

At every opportunity, the people of Durham are putting their trust in the Lib Dems to get the best deal for local residents."

Your new Lib Dem team is:

Belmont: Ken Holroyd and Eric Mavin

Deerness Valley - John Wilkinson

Elvet - David Freeman and David Stoker

Framwellgate Moor - Rev Crooks and Mark Wilkes

Gilesgate - Dennis Southwell and Les Thomson

Newton Hall - Amanda Hopgood and Mamie Simmons

Neville's Cross - Grenville Holland and Nigel Martin

Sherburn - Carol Woods and Maureen Wood
