LIB DEMS CALL FOR AN END TO SHAM CONSULTATION

Lib Dems have attacked the Labour County Council for failing to give people a fair chance to shape the new billion-pound Unitary Authority.
Despite claiming to be conducting a County-wide consultation, the meetings are only open to less than 0.4 % of the population and even County Councillors have yet to be given their chance to have a say on the future of the new Authority.
Sherburn County Councillor Carol Woods said, “Like it or not, this new Council, with a billion pound budget, will play a very important role in shaping the future of County Durham.
“There are half a million people who will be directly affected by the decisions made during this consultation and they should be given a say. At present, a tiny number of people are being consulted. The Labour cabinet – which has already shown itself to be primarily concerned with self-preservation- seem intent on keeping this process as clandestine as possible.
“Democracy in Durham has already taken a huge hit in the last year. We are now calling on the Council to repair some of the damage by truly involving and listening to the people.” |
