Henley humiliation for Labour as Lib Dems surge forward
27th June 2008

Labour's humiliating result in the Henley by-election last night - where they finished fifth and lost their deposit - is a further rejection of Gordon Brown's New Labour, said a leading Lib Dem in Durham today.

The Parliamentary by-election in Henley produced a very positive result for the Lib Dems, and was a disaster for the Labour party.

The Lib Dems cut the Tory majority and increased their share of the vote in second place.

Meanwhile, voters relegated Labour to fifth place.

Cllr Carol Woods, Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson for Durham said today, "The public have again taken the opportunity to send Gordon Brown a clear message. His policies of tax rises for the lower paid, his failure to tackle rocketing energy bills and food bills and his failure to listen to the concerns of hard working families will not be tolerated.

"We have seen here in Durham, at every election, more and more people are backing the Liberal Democrats to bring about the change needed to improve the lives of local residents."
