Durham Lib Dems Do It Different
15th January 2008

The Liberal Democrats in Durham have today done their bit for the environment and relieving congestion in the City by leaving their cars at home.

Today was Do It Different day and events throughout the city aimed to highlight the benefits of using alternative methods of transport.

Lib Dem Deputy Leader of Durham City Council was one of many who took the bus to work this morning and she gave her full backing to the project.

“We all know the benefits of relying less on the car. It helps the environment and it reduces congestion around the City but quite often we’ll take the easy option. Days like this are a great reminder that we should make the effort to use other means of getting about whenever we can.

“I’ve travelled in today on the bus and it means no worrying about where to park, and the roads were clearer than normal as people heeded the call to leave the car for the day.

“It goes to show that there are ways of resolving the traffic problems in the City other than the relief road that might tear through our beautiful city. If we had a real commitment to public transport we could make a difference without the need to simply build more roads.

“One of the things I hear most often from people is that they would like to use buses more often but they need to be more regular, more reliable and cheaper. I’m very aware of how important access to local bus services is for many people.”

As well as Carol Woods. Other Lib Dem councillors went about their business today without the car.

Cllr Philip Wolstenholme walked into town for his council meetings, Cllr Nigel van Zwanenberg got on his bike to get around town and Cllrs John Lightley and Denis Southwell used the bus to get into town.
