Labour Group attempt hijack of the Durham City Mayor
27th August 2008

Durham City Liberal Democrats have expressed their anger at Labour Party attempts to hijack the future of the Mayor of Durham City.

As a result of the demise of Durham City Council on 1 April 2009, a Charter Trust is to be set up with responsibility to elect future Mayors, at least until a Durham City Town Council is in place.

The expectation in the City was that these Charter Trustees would be the 22 County Councillors for the area of Durham District, but the Labour Cabinet at County Hall is expected to decide tomorrow to ask the Government for the Trustees to be all 126 County Councillors – from Sedgefield to Stanley.

Commenting on this, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group at County Hall, Councillor Nigel Martin said:

“This is nothing but playing party politics of the basest kind with the 400 year old Mayoralty of Durham City.

“Before 2003, when the City was under Labour control, they refused to share the position of Mayor with any other party.

“Since 2003, with the Liberal Democrats in control, the council has offered the Mayor to all parties on a proportionate basis, although Labour has refused the offer on several occasions.

“I am appalled that, having lost the political argument in the City, Labour is stooping to a back-door way of taking control of what should be in the gift of the elected representatives of Durham City.

“I am also astonished that this has the active approval of our Labour MP, Roberta Blackman-Woods.

“What right does our MP have to give away the Mayor of Durham City to people who do not represent the City?

“This is yet another sign of the complacency and contempt with which the Labour Party treats Durham. I am sure that the people of Durham will remember this when the next General Election comes.”
