DURHAM HAS NOT BENEFITED FROM BROWN’S FIRST YEAR AS PM - WOODS
25th June 2008

Gordon Brown's first year as Prime Minister has been a disaster, says Carol Woods, Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson for Durham.

Mr Brown was elected uncontested by the Labour Party last year and on 27th June, he will celebrate his first anniversary as Prime Minister.

But local Liberal Democrats are unhappy about Mr Brown’s leadership and have argued strongly that Durham has failed to benefit from his year as Prime Minister.

Cllr Carol Woods said: “Gordon Brown has had a year in office in which he could have set about narrowing the North/South divide. However, I see no significant improvements here in Durham and in the North East as a whole.

“Health and deprivation in the County Durham are generally worse than for the rest of England. Deaths from smoking, cancer, heart diseases and strokes remain higher than the national average. Life expectancy remains lower.

“Local residents on low incomes continue to be worse off after Gordon Brown’s 10p tax fiasco, even after the panic concessions last month.

"Gordon's first year has also been marked by his decision to ignore a referendum in County Durham, despite his promises to listen to the people."

“Thousands are being forced to pay more council tax and many local residents are forced to live in overcrowded conditions, because of the credit crunch and the failure of Labour to build sufficient affordable homes.

“Rather than sort out these local problems, we have endured months of dithering, indecision and a chaotic government under Prime Minister Brown.

“As I go around Durham speaking to residents, I find more and more anger as matters get worse under Gordon Brown rather than better.

The people of Durham are calling for change and they know that only the Lib Dems can beat Labour here.”
