Carol Woods - New Council is wolf in sheep’s clothing!
19th February 2008

Lib Dem concerns that the new Unitary Council for Durham amounts to a takeover by the County Council seems to have been confirmed after it was announced that the elections in May will refer to the new Authority as Durham County Council.

Carol Woods Parliamentary Spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats in Durham City said today,

"I am horrified to learn that the new unitary council will be called "Durham County Council" at the forthcoming elections. I think this will confuse the public who may not immediately realise this is a new council. It appears to be a continuation of the County Council and this is something we were assured would not happen."

"The Labour party know how unpopular the formation of a Unitary Council is so they are trying to sneak this through; it is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. They should be explicit about the fact that this is the same Council setup that 76% of residents voted against last year.”

John Healey MP, Minister for Local Government has himself said “It is really important that everyone sees the change as leading to an entirely new organisation. Not as the existing county or district councils with somehow added functions. I fail to see how elections to the new unitary can be badged in the same way as one of the councils that existed prior to the restructure."

Carol Woods continued "I will be seeking clarification from Department for Local Government in relation to this issue and will also seek legal advice as this is an unacceptable piece of politicking by Labour. The name on the ballot paper should be ‘Durham Unitary Council' to avoid any confusion amongst voters. The Council itself can decide to change its name once elected if it likes but with the election already rushed through by Labour, the aim at present should be to make things as clear as possible to the electorate."
