COST OF UNITARY SWITCH SET TO DOUBLE
24rd January 2008
|
Further accusations of incompetence have been levelled at Labour over plans for local elections this year after the Boundary Commission put forward proposals for a ballot in 2010.
The Commission plans to redraw Durham boundaries later this year, with a suggestion that an election take place just two years later. With elections this May set to cost the taxpayer £600,000, the Lib Dems have called for the Government to do as they have done elsewhere and cancel the Unitary switch completely.
Leader for the Lib Dems on the County Council, Nigel Martin said, “If the go ahead is given for an election in 2008 to be followed by more elections in 2010, it would be a colossal waste of time and money.
“Given that the new Council won’t be fully operational until 2009, it would mean spending half a million pounds to elect a new council this year, for them to have only one worthwhile year before we had to do the same again. I know Labour have a reputation for wasting our money but this is a new low.”
Lib Dem Deputy Leader of the City Council Carol Woods commented,
“With each new development in this story the huge number of people who voted against the new Council are being proved right.
“Dismantling a local government setup that has been working well for decades was always likely to bring nothing but chaos and expense.
“Once again Labour are wasting our money and putting their own self-interest before that of local people.” |
