Lib Dems - winning here!

12.00.00am GMT Thu 11th Mar 2010

John Kelley, the Lib Dem candidate, has won today's by-election in Esh Winning and Waterhouses.

John, who helped lead the campaign against Labour's attempts to move the local school, won by 477 to 380.

After the result was announced, John Kelley said, "I'd like to thank local people for giving me and the Lib Dems their support. I have been working hard for this area for a long time; now I get to continue that work as part of the local team of councillors.

"This result shows that the work of the Lib Dems is being recognised by residents. Even five years ago Labour would have won this election without having to try, but people are tired of being let down by Labour and they are switching to back the Lib Dems.

"I'm now looking forward to getting on with the job of getting the best deal possible for this area."
