LIB DEMS WIN IN PITTINGTON

11.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 30th Jul 2009

Robin Newlove, standing for the Liberal Democrats, has been declared the winner of today's by-election in Pittington.

Robin, who has lived in Pittington for almost 30 years, campaigned strongly on improving local road safety and safeguarding the local environment.

Straight after the result Robin said he was looking forward to bringing about the positive change that Pittington and Low Pittington needed.

The campaign was also notable for its lack of a Labour candidate. In an illustration of the decline of the party in its former heartlands, Labour failed to find anyone willing to stand as a candidate.
