LIB DEMS SIGN UP TO SUPPORT CULTURE BID

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 21st Aug 2009

Carol Woods, Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson for Durham, today signed the wall of support for the City's bid for the Capital of Culture 2013. She also took the opportunity to call on the Labour County Council to do more than pay lip service to the bid.

Carol said, "Durham is a wonderful city and has a fantastic cultural heritage. The former Lib Dem Council worked hard to increase the cultural offering in the city and develop the infrastructure needed; the new County Council must now continue that work.

"Competition for this title will be tough and the County Council must do more than just pay lip service to the bid. They should be providing concrete plans and proper investment if they genuinely want Durham to be a serious contender.

"The County Council need to deliver a substantial programme of cultural activity and improvement that will leave a lasting legacy for the City regardless of the outcome of the bid itself.

"This is a great opportunity and I hope the Council gives the bid the support it requires and aren't just using it as a PR opportunity that they allow to wither and fail."
