I am originally from Cleethorpes in North Lincolnshire. Following University at Cambridge (MA and PhD in Mathematics at Christ's College, followed by a Research Fellowship at Downing College), I came to Durham in December 1975
with my wife Susan to take up a post as Resident Tutor at Collingwood College and Part-time Lecturer in Mathematics at Durham University.

In August 2000 I was appointed Principal of Trevelyan College, and am now a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics in the University. Since 2002 I have been Deputy Dean of Colleges and City Liaison Officer dealing with many student-community issues.

I was elected to County Councillor for the Neville's Cross Division in 1985 and have been re-elected every four years since then. In 1995 I was also elected City Councillor for the Elvet Ward, although I stood down in 1999 because of time pressure.

I have also stood in three General Elections:
1987 (Newcastle Central)
1992 (City of Durham)
1997 (City of Durham)

and one European Election:
1994 (County Durham and Blaydon)

Current Local Issues

Trying to get Durham Johnston rebuilt; the school has many
temporary 'demountable' classrooms several of which have been condemned in
recent years. The Council has just had to spend over £400K replacing two large ones that became unfit and dangerous. After many years of lobbying by me and the governing body, the Council has at last accepted that the school
needs to be rebuilt, but where is the cash to come from. We keep getting
'assurances' that something will happen 'soon', but it is all very vague. The school buildings will continue to deteriorate and large amounts will have to be spent on patch and mend. This cannot be good economic sense.

Traffic in and around Durham. Park and Ride will at last be in place by the end of 2005 and we shall need to see what affect that has. I still think the case will be there for a Western By-pass and probably also a Northern By-Pass.
